How does the festival come up with the theme each time?
Nowadays, the festival’s theme is mainly selected by my husband, Ketut Suardana. As a festival based in Bali, we like to focus on Balinese and Indonesian philosophies that centre on local wisdom, spirituality and identity—areas in which Ketut is highly proficient. Our themes also mirror ongoing global dialogues, cultural shifts and urgent matters that resonate with our audience.
Why “Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara” this time?
The theme, “Speak the Truth, Practice Kindness”, addresses two crucial humanitarian qualities, especially relevant in today’s world. Given current events, this theme gains greater importance, prompting us to contemplate its significance. Writers in contemporary literature embody these ideals, shaping past and future with narratives that advocate truth and kindness. This discussion recalls the Indonesian saying “memanusiakan manusia”, which translates to “humanising humans”. Ultimately, the theme serves as a gentle reminder to treat others with compassion, acknowledging our shared humanity and upholding the core value of human dignity.
