One Friday night in June, in the heart of Singapore’s historic Tanjong Pagar district, dozens of people sit and read quietly.

This isn’t taking place in a library, nor is it a primary school’s enforced reading hour. Instead, these readers are at Book Bar, the city-state’s newest independent bookstore, for the fourth instalment of its monthly Bookworm Banter event. For US$14, you can read for an hour, then chat with fellow readers about books over drinks.
