Geoff Raby is an unashamed and unrepentant ‘realist’, albeit with a leavening of the importance of trade to global security. In his eyes, not only is US influence in decline, but the country is also a ‘wilful and capricious ally’. China may not yet have overtaken it, but Raby sees it doing so as only a matter of time. It is therefore in Australia’s interests to align itself more closely and engage more constructively with China. Doing so is essential for its economic security, on which in turn depends its national security.
